The Nassau Charger, February 1965

The Camping Department of the Nassau County Council again announces Special Programs at Onteora for 1965. Programs for Explorers and Seniors - Onteora offers three programs which are limited to participation by Explorers or Seniors 14 years old or older.

Experienced staff leaders conduct an intensive training program in general staff morale, conduct and participation as leaders in the Boy Scout Camping Program, as well as specialized skill training in the phases of camping program selected by the participants. In addition to the training program, opportunity is also provided for participation in a two day "White Water" Canoe Trip on the Delaware, as well as the Merit Badge program.

The program is offered during the first or second period only - July 3-17 and July 17-31, 1965.

Reservations are being accepted on a first come basis to the limit of facilities, by filling out an application blank and payment of a $10.00 deposit. (Deposit not refundable in the event of cancellation.) Balance of camp fee of $40.00 is payable two weeks before start of camp period.

Adirondack Fulton Chain Canoe Trips - Fun and adventure on the beautiful Fulton chain of lakes in the Adirondacks, swimming, fishing, camping and the comradeship that only wilderness camping can provide. Delaware River Canoe Trips - offer a real high adventure canoe trip for the Explorer or Senior Scout over 14 yrs., who has had previous canoeing experience.

The "White Water Canoeing" of the Delaware offers the thrill of shooting the rapids of Skinners Falls and Foul Rift, just to mention a few.

The trip starts at Onteora with a training and outfitting program followed by nine days on the Delaware, covering about 180 miles.

Two trips will be conducted in 1965 - July 31-August 14, August 14-August 28. Balance of Canoe Trip fee is payable not less than two weeks before each trip. List of recommended Canoe Trip equipment will be mailed to each Scout registered.

Junior Leader Training - A two-week Junior Leaders training program is conducted each period at Onteora. This program follows the National Junior Leader Program, and has operated at Onteora with excellent success. The program is an intensive training in the most approved methods of Troop operation, and does not permit time for earning of Merit Badges, or participation in several of the usual camp activities. Registration is limited to regular Junior Leaders in the Troop, 12 years of age and older, and of at least second class rank. It is recommended that whenever possible, the Scout attend the Junior Leader Training Program prior to his Troop's attendance at either Camp Wauwepex or Onteora.

The total Junior Leader fee is $50.00, which covers entire cost, including recognition presented upon satisfactory completion of the course. Scouts may register by submitting the application and a $10.00 reservation fee to the Council Office. Applications are accepted on a first come basis. The program is offered in all four periods at Onteora, with participation limited to 50 in each period.

The $10.00 reservation fee is not refundable in the event of cancellation, but may be transferred to another Scout. Balance of $40.00 is due at the Council Office not less than two weeks before the start of each period.
