Miscellaneous Information

This staff song sheet is from around 1972. The songs were used at the major campfire held on Parent's Weekend, and as needed otherwise through the season. I can almost hear the songs still echoing through the hills!

For some reason there are two songs numbered "5" below...

ONTEORA SCOUT RESERVATION NASSAU COUNTY COUNCIL

STAFF SONGSHEET

1. HEAR HEAR US CHEER

Hear, Hear us Cheering, let our voices
     ring, ring, ring, ring.
While we're together, you can hear
     us sing, sing, sing, sing.
We'll stick to scouting through the
     rain and through the clear.
Hear, Hear us cheer, the staff from
     Onteora's here. Rah, Rah Rah!
(Softly)
Hear, Hear us cheering, let our voices
     ring, ring ring, ring.
While we're together, you can hear us
     sing, sing sing, sing.
We'll stick to Scouting through the
     rain and through the clear.
(Very Loud)
Hear, Hear us cheer, the Staff from
     Onteora's here. Rah, Rah! ! !

2. THE HAPPY WANDERER

I love to go awandering,
along the mountain track,
and as I go, I love to sing,
my knapsack on my back:
Valderi -Valdera - Valderi -
Valdera - HA-HA-HA-HA-HA -Valderi -Valdera.
My knapsack on my back.

I wave my hand to all I meet,
and they wave back to me,
and Blackbirds call so loud and sweet
from every Greenwood tree

CHORUS
From every Greenwood tree.
(softly)
Oh may I go awandering until the day I die.
Oh may I always laugh and sing
beneath God's Clear blue sky.

CHORUS (Loud)
Beneath God's clear blue sky!

3. ON MY HONOR

On my honor I'll do my best to do my
     duty to God.
On my honor I'll do my best to serve
     my country as I may.
On my honor I'll do my best to do my
     Good Turn each day.
To keep my body strengthened and
     keep my mind awakened.
To follow paths of righteousness.
On my honor I'll do my best.

4. TELL ME WHY

Tell me why the stars do shine,
Tell me why the ivy twines,
Tell me why the Sky's so blue,
Tell me Onteora just why I love you.

Because God made the stars to shine,
Because God made the ivy twine,
Because God made the sky so blue,
That's why Onteora,
That's why I love you.

5. THIS LAND

This land is your land - this land is my land,
From California - to the New York Island
From the Redwood forest, to the Gulf Stream waters,
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking - that ribbon of highway
I saw above me - that endless skyway,
I saw below me - that golden valley,
This land was made for you and me.

I roamed and rambled - and I followed my footsteps, -
To the sparkling sands - of her diamond deserts, -
All around me - a voice was sounding,
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining,
I was strolling,
and the wheat fields waving,
and the dust clouds rolling,
a voice chanting,
as the fog was lifting,
This land was made for you and me.

5. OVERWORKED ETC.

Over worked, underpaid & under-nourished.
When at last Labor Day rolls around
Skin and bones of what once were Human beings,
Is all of the staff that can be found.
Can be found, Can be found.
Is all of the staff that can be found.
Happy is the day when the Scouties go away and we go rolling, Rolling home. Rolling home, rolling home.

By the light of the silvery moon
Happy is the day when the Scouties go away and we go rolling, rolling home.

6. AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL

Oh beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties,
Above the fruited plains,
America, America, God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.
